Academics

Overview

The chemistry discipline at IIT-GN is engaged in a vibrant Ph.D program offering students an energetic atmosphere with state of the art research facilities. The discipline encourages academic independence, scientific collaboration and strongly encourages inter-disciplinary exchanges.
The symbiotic existence of disciplines at IIT-GN also enables Ph.D students registered with chemistry discipline to purse their Ph.D from other disciplines. This is also reflected in the course plan offered by the institute wherein the students are offered electives from other disciplines.

Highlights of Ph.D program at IIT-Gn

  • Full time PhD students are encouraged to present their research work at international conferences. Financial support of up to Rs. 2.00 Lakhs for the entire duration of the programme is available. Additional funding may also be provided.
  • A support of up to US$ 12,500 may be considered in deserving cases to do research work at the best Universities/Labs abroad for a period of 4 to 6 months (IIT Gandhinagar Research Fellowship).

All applications must be submitted online (http://www.iitgn.ac.in/aca-programm.htm). A soft copy of the submitted application will be sent to your email ID in 2-3 working days. You need to furnish hardcopy of the application form with photograph and all the documentary evidence in original (testimonials, certificates, publications, work experience and research/professional experience) at the time of interview. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

Eligibility Criteria

Must be CSIR-NET or GATE or JEST qualified. OR Highly motivated B.Tech. students from other engineering disciplines with 60% marks (55% for SC/ST) or a CPI/CGPA of 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST) out of 10 may also apply. Such applicants must have a valid GATE score in Chemistry or their own discipline.

Overview

The M.Sc. Chemistry program at IIT-GN started in July 2013 with 9 students selected from JAM (Joint Admission Test). The balanced M.Sc. curriculum aims to develop strong foundations in the core areas of chemistry while introducing the students to modern research areas. This is achieved via a significant research component that is incorporated into the course structure (Independent Research Projects). In addition to the core chemistry courses students are also exposed to interdisciplinary topics via a flexible credit structure, which enables them to choose advanced electives from other disciplines.
A major focus of the curriculum aims at enabling the students gain significant hands-on research experience working in well-established research facilities. Our alumni (link to alumni page) have gone on to pursue doctoral research in reputed academic institutions as well as work in the industry.
